Questions to ask students!
What characteristics distinguished Greece from other early civilizations?
Consider:
·        the rise of the city-states
·        democratic rule
·        religion and myths with humanlike gods and goddesses
 
How might the Greeks’ victory over the Persians have affected Greek culture?
Consider:
·        the confidence and sense of security it gave the Greeks
·        the rise of Athens after the victory
·        the strong leadership of Pericles
 
Government
Agree A powerful leader can stress common characteristics and show how unity brings strength.
Disagree A powerful leader can stir resentment and the desire for independence.
 
Culture
Agree A strong sense of cultural unity helps people put aside their differences and work for the common good.

Section 1: Greek Art of the Golden Age
Lesson Plan 6.1
OBJECTIVES
1.      Explain why the 400s B.C. are considered the golden age of Greek art and architecture.
2.      Examine how Greek art of the golden age reflected the Greeks view of themselves and the world.
TEACH OBJECTIVE 1
Visual explanation of Greece
·        Geography, important people, places, and events
TEACH OBJECTIVE 2
LEVEL 1: Have students discuss the ideals expressed in the Parthenon
LEVEL 3: Have each student select a piece of Greek art and explain how it expresses the four basic Greek ideals.
 
Important Dates
·        Quizzes start Wednesday January 5th 2011 6.1
·        Food Projects are DUE Friday January 7th 2011
·        Test is scheduled for Chapter 6 on Thursday January 13th 2010
Lesson Plan
·        Orange stand for the days of the week
·        Blue stands for work that we will be doing in class, homework, test, quizzes, and projects.
·        Black is for State criteria, standards, and evaluating points.
 
Monday
·        Pass out 29 key word, geographic location, and important person sheet to students
o       Computer Lab
§         Students are to find a relevant picture explaining each concept. Once a picture has been found, students write in their own words an explanation to the picture.
§          Can have four pictures per slide
Tuesday
·        Computer Lab
o       Students will complete visual explanation of Greece.
o       All projects should be printed and handed in at the end of the hour.
 
HOMEWORK 
·        Students should be able to explain verbally how the art in this section exhibits Greek characteristics.
 
REVIEW
Complete the Section 1 Review on p. 132.
Complete Guided Reading 6.1
 
Wednesday
RETEACH/DISCUSS
·        Discuss Chapter 6.1
ASSESS
Have students complete Daily Quiz 6.1. As Alternative Assessment, you may want to use the graphic organizer in this section’s lessons.
 
Section 2: Philosophers and Writers of the Golden Age
Lesson Plan 6.2
OBJECTIVES
1.      Explain the basic ideas of Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle.
2.      Identify the achievements of Greek mathematicians and scientists of the golden age.
3.      Identify the literary forms that originated or flourished during Greece’s golden age.
 
Thursday
·        Computer Lab Teach Objective 1
o       Students will research Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle. 
o       While researching students are to create 3 columns in excel. The columns are to be labeled Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle.
§         Students are to list as many important things about each person as possible. (No less than five per subject)
§         Once students have researched Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle they are to write a short paragraph on who they feel made the largest impact on Greece and why. Paragraphs should be well thought and written.
·        Keep in mind to ask questions such as: How do you view education? the world? What special views do you hold? What are your views on government?

Food Activities are DUE at the start of the hour
·        Students were to research a country, find an original recipe from that country, and trace the ingredients back to its origin
·        Once the recipe has been found students work with a partner to create the food, and or drink
·        Students are given a rubric to follow

1.      Detail how Philip II of Macedon paved the way for cultural change.
2.      Examine what Alexander the Great accomplished.
3.      Identify the factors that contributed to the breakup of Alexander’s empire.
 
Tuesday January 11

·        Sections 6.3 and 6.4
 
CLOSE
Have students verbally sequence the following events:
·        Enabled Philip II to conquer Greece
·        Enabled Alexander to build his empire
·        Caused the empire to break up
 
ASSESS
Have students complete Daily Quiz 6.3. As Alternative Assessment, have students use the speech exercise in this section’s lessons.
