Geography
Agree The geography of a region must allow for good transportation and communication in order for civilizations to develop.
Disagree A civilization can develop even if the terrain isolates towns and cities.

Agree A government can rule best if decisions are made by only a limited number of citizens.
Disagree A government rules best when all members of society are invited to participate as citizens.
 
Global Relations
Agree The development of an advanced and respected civilization often requires military dominance.
Disagree War-mongering societies are often seen as barbarians not worthy of respect.

Lesson Plan 5.1
 
OBJECTIVES
1.      Analyze the role that geography played in early Greek history.
2.      Explain the influence that Minoan and Mycenaean civilizations had on Greek civilization.
3.      Describe the development of the Greek city-states.
TEACH OBJECTIVE 1
LEVEL 1: Examine the maps on pages 107 and 108. What geographical features they notice on the Balkan Peninsula. Guide a discussion of the advantages and disadvantages these features posed for people living in the region.
 
TEACH OBJECTIVE 2
ALL LEVELS: Compare-and-contrast. influence of the Minoans and Mycenaeans on Greek civilization. ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNERS, COOPERATIVE LEARNING 
 
TEACH OBJECTIVE 3
LEVEL 3: Create a chart with four columns. Label each column with these key features of the city-state: Small size, small population, setting on a hill, and public meeting place.  list details about each key feature as it relates to the development of city-states. Then have students write details about each feature as it applies to their city or town.

1.      Explain the importance of Homer’s works.
2.      Identify major religious beliefs and practices of the ancient Greeks.
3.      Describe changes that occurred in the governments of the Greek city-states.

1.      Explain the basis of Athens’s economy. 
2.      Describe the family life and education of Athenians.

1.      Explain how the Persian Wars began and what the results of those wars were.
2.      Analyze the effects of Pericles’s leadership on Athens.
3.      Explain how the Peloponnesian War began and its results.
