Section 1: Indus River Valley Civilization

OBJECTIVES
1. Create a project that examines all concepts of the Indus River Valley Civilizations
2. Examine the role geography and climate played in the settlement of the Indian subcontinent.
3. Investigate how people in the first Indus River valley civilization lived.
Let’s Get Started!
Describe how physical geography affected settlement of the United States. (Students might mention the waterways and mountain ranges of the United States) Describe how climate affects their lives today. Section 1 they will learn about the effect geography and climate had on the settlement of the Indian subcontinent.
TEACH OBJECTIVE 1
LEVEL 1: Students will be creating a five part project.
· Projects may include but are not limited to:
o PowerPoint
o 3D Presentations
o Video Reinactment
o Posters (This is not the easy way out, make sure you put LOTS of effort into it)
o Other APPROVED project
· Students will follow Part 1 project rubric
o Summarize India’s climate. (They should note the seasonal monsoons and the potential for extreme heat.) Reminder: First civilizations arose in four great river valleys; these four valleys included the Indus River valley. Students will explain why they think this civilization arose in the Indus Valley rather than in the Ganges Valley. (should note that the Ganges Valley receives the heaviest rainfall during the monsoon.) ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNERS

LEVEL 3: Make a chart that lists 10 to 15 facts about the Harappan civilization, using the information on pages 53-55. Organize charts into four columns labeled: government, religion, technology, and economy.
Each student will share one fact from his or her chart.
o What causes, other than an earthquake or flood, might explain the unburied skeletons and abandoned homes at Mohenjo Daro. (Students might suggest a plague, a drought, a deadly heat wave, and so on.)

ALL LEVELS:
· Students look at the chart they created about Harappan achievements. Draw at least one other type of graphic organizer that could convey this information effectively. (Students might draw cluster diagrams, branching or webbing organizers, horizontal or vertical lists, circular [pie] charts, concentric circles in a “bulls-eye” formation, and so on.
· Draw a map of the Indian subcontinent showing the Indus River valley and Ganges River valley.
o Label major landforms
o Two Famous cities
o Geographic features helping civilizations of India
o Geographic features hurting civilizations of India

As you read create to SEPARATE Graphs that will be turned in
Graph 1 (Make sure these are on separate paper to turn in)
- In your notes create a 3 column chart titled Indo-Aryans
- Column titles include Political, Economic, and Cultural Developments.
- List facts pertaining to each title
(Students should mention the Vedas, Indo-Aryan religion, the formation of states, and the spread of Sanskrit.
Graph 2 (make sure these are on separate paper to turn in)
- Draw a three-column chart in your notes. Title it Characteristics of Indo-Aryan Society, and label its three columns Government, Social Life, and Economy.
Part 2 Writing:
- After your graph in a paragraph explain how immigration affected the society of the United States today? Think both positively and negatively. If you get stuck think of your own heritage
- Continue writing: Why do you think the Indo-Aryans invaded India
- Explain in detail using your book as a reference. You will be sharing these the next class day.
