You’re Country Project
To recap Unit 1 covering chapters one through four, and transition into our next unit you will be completing a project. This project is worth a number of points so it is vital that you put forth all effort. You will be graded on each part of this project.
1. Completion of Part 1.
2. Knowledge of material found. You should be able to answer the majority of the concepts below
3. Quality of Presentation
4. Organization of project. There will be five parts to this project. When completing each project (1-5) they should be placed in your three-ring binder.
What you need to have in your project:
1. Needs to be completed in PowerPoint. You will present an outline of your country to the class.
2. What is the name of your country: When deciding your countries name make sure, you use one that you have created. Do not use an all ready established country. Example: Democratic Republic of Wiseley
3. What does your country’s name mean:
a. Democratic =Supreme authority rests with the people.
b. Republic = A state or country not led by a Monarch, much of the power lies with the people.
c. Wiseley = Name of the person who settled the land. Meaning extremely wise and all knowing.
4. What does your country’s flag look like: Create a flag that stands for your country? Remember the colors and designs in all flags stands for something.
· Example the United States Flag has thirteen red and white stripes standing for the original thirteen colonies.
· When the flag was adopted in 1777 the colors of red, white, and blue did not have particular meaning, but the colors of the great seal did have specific meanings.
o The color red represents the blood that was shed for our freedom and hardiness and valour
o The blue canton is called the “Union” standing for vigilance, perseverance & justice."
o White signified purity and innocence
· The 50 stars stand for the 50 states that make up the Union of the United States.
o However, why a star, "The star is a symbol of the heavens and the divine goal to which man has aspired from time immemorial; the stripe is symbolic of the rays of light emanating from the sun."
· Give a picture of your flag
5. Give a description of our Government and State
a. What is your government used for? How is it affected by society and how does society affect it?
b. What are the public policies of your government and give examples?
c. How does your government divide and exercise its three basic powers of:
i. Legislative Power
ii. Executive Power
iii. Judicial Power
d. What is a constitution and how are your countries powers outlined within it?
e. When deciding what a government does you can usually look within its constitution. The American system of government was created to serve and is listed in the preamble. We the people of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Prosperity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.
i. Describe how the following affects your country.

ii. Write a Preamble to your constitution. Your preamble the concepts of what is the purpose of your government.
6. In our world today, there are many different forms of Governments. Within those governments, different people hold different powers.
a. What are the names of countries that are located near yours?
b. How does their country relate to yours concerning who has the power. Explain where each of these governments started. Example Democracy started in Greek time. Aristotle said “Man is by nature a political animal”

7. What set of circumstances first brought your country into existence? There are four theories that have emerged as the most widely accepted explanations for the origin of your states. Make sure you describe all four theories, when you decide which one best fits your country create a story explaining how this relates to your country. Example: Force Theory
8. If we were to look at your country you would have four characteristics that would make you a dominate political unit. These include a population, Territory (How big is it), Sovereignty, and Government. Briefly define each one of these in how they relate to your country. Make sure if you border other countries, you list those.
a. Example: Population 2008 consensus 305, 785, 567
b. Bordered by Mexico, and Canada
9. Democracy in the United States does exist because we feel it is the best government in the world. Rather it exists because the American People believe in its basic concepts and will only exist as long as these beliefs stay solid. (Remember what happened in V for Vendetta) Take the concepts that make up the American Democracy and relate them to your country. Remember it is important to remember when you are talking about individual freedoms does that mean you are free to do anything you want? While you answer these vaguely, list examples of what would not be acceptable. These concepts include:
a. Worth of the individual
b. Equality of all persons
c. Majority Rule, Minority Rights
d. Necessity of Compromise
e. Individual Freedom
10. In the Democracy of the United States we have a Free Enterprise system that allows private ownership of capital goods, investments made by private decisions not government directive. Now that we have an idea of what your country is about, we need to approach your own countries economic system. Please include the following concepts in your countries diagram.
a. What type of Economic System does your country have? Example Free enterprise system
i. Describe what it means and works
b. How is your economic system affected by supply and demand
i. Are there some countries that do not have supply and demand? Why
c. Why is it necessary for some Governmental interference in the economy?
d. What is Mixed economy and how does it relate to your economy?
e. What makes up your countries economy

United States Government
Now that you have established the framework for your country listing, the relationship between the people and government it is now time to build the historical concepts your country was built on. It is important to remember that this project in an ongoing process. Your project should flow through all five parts. If you have questions, it is vital to ask them as soon as possible. If you wait too long it will be difficult to catch up. Make sure you keep all of the parts in your three-ring binder and with you during all class periods.
The last part you added during project one was the assets and needs of your country. Meaning what you produced and exported to what you needed and imported. As you should have learned, while the United States has a free market system there still is a need for governmental guidelines. Upton Sinclair and the meat packing plants is a perfect example. (Explained in class) To expand on this concepts the first English colonist new there needed to be orderly regulations of their relationship with one another as well as the government include the following concepts within your project.
1. Just like the English colonist who came to America you will need input three ideas in shaping your government. These include:
a. Ordered Government
b. Limited Government
c. Representative Government
2. Explain how the concepts of Ordered Government, Limited Government, and Representative Government started with a few documents
a. Magna Carta
b. Petition of Right
c. English Bill of Rights
3. You have started your own country, but there is land around you that is yet to be settled. Based on the original thirteen colonies what are the three types of colonies that could be established in this new land?
a. As you did with your new country, you will need to set up three different colonies based on the charters. Example: One colony is Vohn Village
i. Established in 2008 by the King of Girlie Land
1. The Royal Charter was granted to Sir Vohn
2. This colony was under direct control of the crown
3. The pattern of Government:
a. King Named a governor to serve as the colony’s chief executive
b. A council named by the king served as an advisory body of the royal governor.
c. The governor’s council eventually became the upper house of the colonial legislature.
d. The lower house was elected by the property owners qualified to vote.
e. This two house legislature is known as bicameral
b. As time passes, you see many changes in the colonies being settled around you. Many of these changes have to do with the suppression of the people of the colonist by the motherland. List how the following concepts affected the people of the colonies.

c. From your Cyclops binoculars, you have observed the hardships the colonists have faced. You see members of the community come together. Briefly describe these meetings.

d. As we return back to your country. Describe when you created an article of confederation, how it was ratified, and the responsibility of the presiding officer.
