To honor our men and women serving in the military, Gobles students once again created holiday cards to send overseas. The Southwest Michigan Chapter of the Blue Star Mothers put together holiday boxes every year to let the military personnel know that they are not forgotten. They call the program Operation Holiday Cheer. It has become a tradition, here in Gobles, to have the high school NHS and Mrs. Butler’s 5th grade art classes team up to create beautifully decorated cards and envelopes to add to the care packages. Mrs. Butler says that her NHS group purchases cards and that most of them get signed by students and community members during the Red Cross Blood Drive. The 5th graders design the envelopes with festive holiday motifs and make handmade cards, too. This year we finished almost 200 cards!
In addition to being part of Operation Holiday Cheer, other National Honor Society news is that we beat the quota set for us by the Red Cross at our October 30th blood drive. The Red Cross hoped for us to collect 33 pints and we got 41! We had 25 student donations, many of them 1st timers! The hope is that once they donate here they will become lifelong blood donors - every pint collected can provide for 3 medical procedures and/or medical research needs. High school drives bring in a huge percentage of the blood collected in the United States making these drives a very important part of the Red Cross efforts.
Every donation also adds to the money that comes back to Gobles in the form of scholarships handed out at graduation time. There are 2 more drives scheduled for this school year, February 4th and April 15th. If you can, please consider donating!
Advisor, Mrs. Butler, would like to congratulate the NHS membership and the officers, led by President Emily Bolhuis, for a great job. The Red Cross always compliments us on our organization and service to the community.
