Gobles students from kindergarten through 12th grade will embark on the new 2010-11 school year on Tuesday, September 7, with a half-day schedule.

In the Elementary building, the day will begin with doors opening at 7:45 a.m. and the tardy bell ringing at 8:00 a.m. Students are expected to report to the teacher/classroom posted on the elementary main office windows. Adult helpers will be in the halls.

In the Middle/High School building, students will be meeting with their assigned teacher (see table to right) to pick up their class schedule and locker assignment beginning at 8:10 a.m. At 8:20 a.m. all students 7th-12th grade will meet in the High School Gym for a brief welcome from Principal Macklin. Following the meeting, classes will rotate according to the student’s class schedule on a 20 minute per class rotation to collect class books and information for the semester.

The day will end at 11:25 a.m. for both buildings and resume on Wednesday, September 8, with a full day and normal bell schedule.

For years the State of Michigan has argued that a main objective of high school education should be "college readiness" for students, making sure students are ready to do college-level work when they graduate from high school. During the 2009/2010 school year, students in Pam Westcott's Advanced Placement (AP) English class took college readiness to an unprecedented level of success, with 75% of her students eligible for college credit, compared to 58.6% of students nationwide in English Literature in 2009.

To be college ready, and to be eligible to earn college credit, a student must earn a score of three (3) or higher on the end-of-course exam. Twelve out of the sixteen Gobles students who participated in the exam earned a college ready score.

Farewell speaker Ben Lee pauses during his address; Senior class president Becca Phelps presents Mrs. Jodi Winne with an award from the Class of 2010 for her support over the years.

As his last words echoed through the gymnasium for the 1,500 family members, friends, and well-wishers in attendance for the Class of 2010, farewell speaker Ben Lee rejoined his classmates for their non-traditional exit from the 117th Commencement ceremony on June 6 at Gobles High School. The sounds of the class song started up, and the Class of 2010 started dancing, all the way out of the gym and into the bright sunshine of the afternoon, and their futures as high school graduates.

Message from the High School Principal, Chris Macklin

Here we are, at the threshold of the 2010-2011 school year. It is a very exciting time for the Board, administrators, teachers, support staff, our students, parents/guardians, the greater Gobles community, and anyone else that wants to share our anticipation. Very soon our schools will be bustling with the essential activities needed to get a new school year off to a great start. Our buildings will be alive with the youthful energy of middle and high school students.

I want to tell you that our buildings are very clean and ready. Thanks to the crews for their hard work and focus on detail. Our campus is looking better and better. The higher levels of precipitation have greened up our grass and our athletic fields are ready to go. The sounds of practicing teams and our marching band have begun to fill the air. A new year always brings great enthusiasm and high hopes.

Remember parents that you continue to be an essential part of your student’s success. I continue to suggest that your positive approach to your student’s effort, communication, and achievement are the foundation of “the best year ever.” Encourage your student, support their challenges, offer your advice and help them be ready to start strong and build on upcoming victories.

It is essential for our students to be in school, in every class, every day. Research has told us for years that students with great attendance do very well. It seems simple, and it is. If you are going to learn, you need to be with the teachers who are excited to teach. Our teachers are excited and ready to do just that.

Look at the many extra-curricular activities open to your student. I know that fun is an integral part of attitude. Help your student explore athletics, clubs, student council, the National Honor Society, math competitions, quiz bowl, and the many offerings in our schools. There is an excellent chance that one or more of our activities can add to the challenges and enjoyment of school in Gobles.

Be sure to review the student handbook with your student. Our handbook reminds all students that they have a great responsibility to use their knowledge of what is right and wrong as a help to a practice of making only good choices. The handbook is filled with information to help every student see the elements of solid character, the expectations of our schools and the roadmap to a smooth, trouble free year. We are Gobles and we must do all we can to help each other to reach all of our goals.

I welcome the students back to school. I look forward to the positive progress that will make us all very proud to be Tigers. I look forward to every day and the chance to help your student make the best of their experience in Gobles Public Schools.
