School Political Update from Mrs. Wilson

I attended the Consensus Revenue Conference in Lansing January 11th. At this time it appears our students will be funded $6898 per pupil for 2010-2011. That is an additional cut of about $258 from where we are now, but remember we began the 2009-2010 year expecting to be funded at $7316 per pupil and faced a $165 per pupil cut in November. Since next year is an election year, it is anticipated there would be no additional cut – at least until after November.

The governor’s budget will be released in February. Until that happens we will not know exactly what our finding will be, and even then it is only a tentative amount. Even after the state adopts the budget, as we saw this year with mid-year cuts, it is still a tentative amount.

Michigan needs a change in how schools are funded. We need to develop an equitable system based on new and different stable revenues. Locally we are doing everything we can to reduce costs, but Lansing needs to help on the revenue side.

Continue to contact our senators and representatives and let them know we expect them to produce a new, better plan for school funding. Be sure to attend town hall and other meetings with our legislators and let them know we expect them to solve the problems we face and not just play party politics. These are our children and our future and they deserve the best.
